hi Very Happy
Gold is gold and silver is silver everywhere, but perhaps the big difference is the artwork on those gold or silver bullion coins. As a collector I find my own Philippines BSP minted coins, somewhat lacking, dull or stale?, in choice of artwork, the BSP building, the mint Building in QC, a face shown in sideview, is not really so exciting as art subjects, thus less appealing to collect and only for those serious collectors.

The Flora and Fauna series was great, that Monkey eating eagle in Silver bullion would be a terrific addition to a set, If ever that comes up, I'm the first in line to get it Very Happy

PostSubject: Philippines Future Bullion Coins   Tue Oct 13, 2009 10:18 pm

Another angle to the appreciation of gold is the loss of value of the US dollar compared to the piso and the world's major currencies. In the past few weeks, some central banks have openly indicated that they are contemplating removal of the USD as a reserve currency, and the oil-producing countries aren't pleased with the instability of the buck, either.

Today the US dollar buys only 46.7 pisos. A year ago it was 47.9, and four years ago today, on October 13, 2005, the dollar bought 55.9 pisos. This is a 16.5% drop in the value of the dollar. The spread is much greater respecting other currencies.

All of this is aiding the climb in the value of gold. This thread is about "Philippine Future Bullion Coins," so I had better get back on topic. If the appreciation in gold is due primarily to losses in American financial markets and international prestige, then possibly the value of gold will spike, then settle down at a fraction of its current value. Or maybe not.

But if gold prices slump after the BSP gets into the bullion coin business, many investors could be caught with quantities of gold coins they can only sell at a substantial loss.

I know the theory that for every seller there must be a buyer, but perhaps this instability suggests it is a poor time for the BSP to enter the gold bullion coin field.

China already told BSP to use SDR instead of USD in international trading. The FED continues low interest rate even though according to them the US economy is recovering---another good signs for gold investors.

just a little side note. I think one of the reasons why we don't have gold or silver bullion coins being minted and sold by the BSP is because we don't have a commodities market, unlike in the US. That's why that price that we're monitoring on gold or silver comes from the US i think or Japan not our own because we don't have a commodities market. The Exchanges that we have only sell stocks from corporations.

the securities regulation code allows the setting up of a commodities exchange but no one seems to be interested in setting it up. perhaps it's not economically viable in the Philippines.

there's a kitco price index for gold, silver and platinum at the front of the site that everyone can see so there's really no need to post a daily update. I'm guessing you have a lot of gold with you because you seem pretty excited every time gold goes up.

historically, people tend to go to gold when the economy is down so im wondering how much the price of gold and silver will be a few years from now if the US economy recovers. I wonder if the price will ever go back to the late 90s and early 2000 when the US economy was strong and gold was less than $300 and silver just above $4. anyway this is not good news for collectors because the demand for gold and silver from investors is driving the price up for our collectibles.

gold should go as high as $1,500.00 by early next year. and silver could test the $30.00 new current high mark.
