| The Philippines is currently the 17th largest gold producing country in the world. This is a respectable standing.
Gold or silver bullion coin production is contingent on three main factors: availability of refined ore (which we have), low production costs, and a vigorous marketing program to sell the bullion coins in G20 countries and emerging Asian economies.
"Low production costs" are the mountain for us to climb, because we are only now gaining the full capability to produce the bulk of our circulation coins, and it may take some time before we can strike high-quality uncirculated and proof coins at low unit costs necessary to enter the bullion coin market. Currently, the production costs (which are not driven by labor inputs) are too high to make entry into this market practical. The good news is: that is beginning to change for the better in the Philippines!
Then there is the supremely important issue of marketing. Our home market currently cannot absorb sizable bullion coin production and, in fact, ALL the countries now in this market depend on foreign sales. We must develop the Philippine reputation for producing quality coins, and get our message out in a very tight and competitive marketplace that is dominated by players of long standing.
Personally I don't think a Jeffreys eagle is a good theme for Philippine bullion pieces. The name "Eagle" is recognized worldwide as a popular bullion piece distributed by the United States. We need a different name that is easily identified with the Philippines by outsiders.
There is a lot of numismatic talent among the members of this discussion group. Can anyone suggest a different theme and name for future Philippine bullion gold and silver coins? |

| On theme and name.
Eagle for me just a comment represents freedom but I like chicks gathered in the hens wings.
Flora and fauna is good mostly Filipino.
There is a bull or tamaraw, symbolism in bull is the one who flow the fileds, seen some national geograhic episode about a pack of lioness targeting the alpha bull the herd try to protect the alpha bull for it is a price possescion of the herd, but the lioness succeed.
There is also the lion the protector of the pack the one who confront the advesaries, hyenna or other lion offering his life to the pack, just like the movie nania.
Brave as a Lion tame as a Lamb.
There is also palay seen some celtic coins with weath on it or corn a fruit bearing plant.
It could be flora and fauna theme but with more meaning now.
It is good to see in Phillipines coin to Glorify and Honor God.
As other inscription in other countries. |

| the silver bullion uncirculated coin should have a size of 40.6mm (same with american eagle) and the silver proof should have a size of 45.1mm (same with australian lunar series II). that is my hope and dream. |

| Someone may be able to expand on this, but I have always related the changes in the BSP logo to modernization and evolution, and the concept that simplicity strengthens the design - as with most graphics. |

| hi Gold is gold and silver is silver everywhere, but perhaps the big difference is the artwork on those gold or silver bullion coins. As a collector I find my own Philippines BSP minted coins, somewhat lacking, dull or stale?, in choice of artwork, the BSP building, the mint Building in QC, a face shown in sideview, is not really so exciting as art subjects, thus less appealing to collect and only for those serious collectors. The Flora and Fauna series was great, that Monkey eating eagle in Silver bullion would be a terrific addition to a set, If ever that comes up, I'm the first in line to get it |

| Another angle to the appreciation of gold is the loss of value of the US dollar compared to the piso and the world's major currencies. In the past few weeks, some central banks have openly indicated that they are contemplating removal of the USD as a reserve currency, and the oil-producing countries aren't pleased with the instability of the buck, either.
Today the US dollar buys only 46.7 pisos. A year ago it was 47.9, and four years ago today, on October 13, 2005, the dollar bought 55.9 pisos. This is a 16.5% drop in the value of the dollar. The spread is much greater respecting other currencies.
All of this is aiding the climb in the value of gold. This thread is about "Philippine Future Bullion Coins," so I had better get back on topic. If the appreciation in gold is due primarily to losses in American financial markets and international prestige, then possibly the value of gold will spike, then settle down at a fraction of its current value. Or maybe not.
But if gold prices slump after the BSP gets into the bullion coin business, many investors could be caught with quantities of gold coins they can only sell at a substantial loss.
I know the theory that for every seller there must be a buyer, but perhaps this instability suggests it is a poor time for the BSP to enter the gold bullion coin field. |
