This is one of the finest 1918 Mule I have ever seen! Its amazing because the reverse and obverse have been double struck which evident in the doubling of letters on the upper legends. The reverse also show that the die has cracked. Are you the owner?

Yes, I am the rightful owner of this coin. I also want to know the value of the coin. Any idea what will it grade if submitted to either PCGS or NGC.

Recently Stack, an auction house in New York offered one early this year for $16,000 to $20,000. Yours should never be very far behind . You could check the article on the web page of this site. What else do you have? You might want to share some more.

This coin of yours will be encapsulated by PCGS but may only be graded as genuine but no numerical grade because of a possible environmental damage. The brown coating on the reverse side on the date area is the culprit. PCGS are very conservative in grading and a slight problem in the coin will be rejected by them.

OK, if PCGS will only grade this as genuine, will NGC or ANACS certify this with number? or can this be conserved?

ANACS will grade them with number but they will put a detail reason below the grade. For example: US-Phil. 1918-S 5C. Mule F-15 Environmental damage. In my opinion, your coin can be a candidate for conservation. NCS (Numismatic conservation service) will try to conserve them if they can. Then they will ask you to forward them to NGC for grading if they succesfully restore them to a normal piece. NGC owns the NCS.

Is this something I can do myself, like soaking/dipping in an acetone? From the picture provided, what is the detail grade of this coin?

Placed a little amount of acetone in a dish. Used a cue tip and moisten it with an acetone. Rub the cue tip gently into the toning part of the coin. This should removed the film coating on your coin. If this procedure won't work, then don't try any other forms of cleaning. Leave it alone. Using other forms of cleaning method may harm your coin permanently and will be irreversible. In my opinion, the grade of your coin is F-15. But grading is very subjective to each person even to all grading companies. Some might grade higher and some might be lower. The best way you can do is to submit them to ANACS for grading. ANACS is the most lenient among the 3 top tier grading companies.

yes, try dipping it in acetone for a few hours, rubbing could leave some damage to the coin.

the surface alteration was done before the it was varnished, not unless you rubbed it. Acetone doesn't do anything to the metal, it just dries up.

There was no rubbing involved here, this was soaked for over a month and the brown stuff came off then rinse it with water. I believed that the previous owner altered the surface to hide something but who knows. My personal opinion is this coin looks good and I think this will grade at NGC or ANACS.

A five centavo coin of that year I find hard to find, and am pleased to see one here being discussed, your coin, even with that surface, looks quite good and with lots of details. Nice pic!
