Never noticed this until you presented it since all coins I encountered are either salvaged or in poor condition. This is similar to the 50 centavos 1918 with inverted mintmark.

All of the 1936M commonwealth 50 centavos are inverted "S" in the centavos area. Just go to yahoo search engine and type Philippines 1936 50 centavos and you will then see a lot of sample pictures of that coin. All have similar characteristic.

First time I saw a perfect specimen at close-up...

For all those year that this coin got out of the Mint facilities, no one had ever metioned that the S is being inverted. Even in any catalog or any reference book not a single word. Now, the question is ... is there anything out there that the S is not invereted?
