PostSubject: help identifying some Philippine gold coins   Wed May 02, 2012 4:54 am

Recently a friend showed me 3 among the many gold coins he had inherited from his mother. I was a little bit baffled since I can't find any information about this nice shiny coins. They are 1915 and 2 1929 20 centavo gold coins. At first I thought they may be bronze coins(not much info on this either) but on further scrutiny they appear to be gold. He can't give me provenance except his parents lived in the province of . I would appreciate it if anyone can furnish me information and historical details about these coin. Due to sentimental reasons these coins are and most likely will never be sold but handed down to his children. We are just curious to learn about these coins

are these particular coins Philippine coins? Unless you can upload a picture, it is very difficult to determine what coin it might be.

Assuming it is a Philippine 1915 and 1929 20 centavo coin, i would assume that someone gold plated these coins.

Thank you very much ericgo. I will relay the information to my friend. They are indeed Philippine coins with the Filipinas on the obverse and the shield eagle wings on the reverse. Perhaps he can gather more provenance about these coins and check the remaining hoard(some with his siblings), unfortunately his mother died 2 or 3 years ago at age of 98-99 so she won't be able to help at all.

This further deepen the mystery. Further research shows the US mint minted Philippine gold coins betweek 1903 to 1936; however it was not stated what denominations and years they were minted. I wish I can upload pictures with this posting (though I find pictures by others) but can't find such topic in the website help section(except emoticons).

hopefully someone with more knowledge on these coins can give their input.

I personally do not know of any Philippine gold coins minted for circulation by the US between 1903 to 1936.
