I have a coin with this inscription: BOARDS OF GOVERNORS ANNUAL MEETINGS 1976 MANILA and on the other side REPUBLIKA NG PILIPINAS 50 PISO. This is one of the most beautiful coin the Modern Commemorative Coins series because it has a map of the Philippines in one side and many like it so much. It is about a World Bank meeting held here.

Please look at Krause - Mishler, Book of World Coins, KM 215, for additional info.. It was a Philippine issued commemorative coin, 27.40 grams and 925 Fine Silver.

I finally got hold of my commemorative coin and compared it with your photo and found that it is different. Anyway, I heard that it there was a special coin given to VIPs of the IMF-WB during that time because the Philippine government was then asking for big concessions and it was said that then President Marcos ordered that the visitors get everything they want. Is it gold?

I remember also that during the APEC meeting in Manila a few years back, the government gave all foreign dignitaries and VIPs tokens. And the tokens are made of gold.

I bought one of these at ebay about 10 years ago. They come in a hard plastic holder with a black base. I paid under $20 so I have always thought it was made of nickel or silver, and never worried much about it. But now I have had a close look under a glass and there is a real "Golden" look to it.

What you have is really an important piece. It is definitely not a coin but a sort of token or memorabilia. This is traditionally given to Dignitaries, Very Important Persons, Heads of States, etc.. The government cannot just give them coins which may become very embarrassing, imagine giving money from one you are begging for a loan? , or it may be impractical as it may not mean much to the person. You just have to give something special, so it has to be precious, in all probability GOLD or maybe Platinum.. Usually it is very few. and kept for long by people, thus rare..
