personally im still buying silver coins. im trying to make low bids for some coins hoping that some are in need to sell their coins.

mang totoy increased his 50 cent coins (from my last visit) i bought some from him for 380 per piece (around 2 weeks ago) but when i called earlier this week, the 50 cent pieces were priced at 425 per piece.

425.00 peso for 50 centavos. is that for 1903's series or 1907's to 1945s?. if that is for 1945s. then that is exactly the bullion value. then i would choose earlier dates and better condition. right?.

by calculating the bullion value of a coin based on today kitco bid $40.64/oz and exchange rate at 42.9681 peso per dollar.

1903s-06s - 1,500.49 peso
1907s-12s - 989.55 peso.

by using the same spot price and exchange rate above. what will be the Mang Totoy buying and selling prices. is it still 1,300.00 buying for 03's and 800.00 for 07's. and selling 1,400.00 for 03's and 900.00 for 07's?.

last time i bought from mang totoy the price was 1700 for the 1903 - 1905s. im sure he increased his price since i haven't been to him in almost a month. mainly because the wife doesn't like the peso coins, thinks i have too much of them already and she thinks that the dos mundos is a "prettier" coin to collect.

Restituto "Totoy" Velasco or popularly known as Mang Totoy of Quiapo has a very small stall in front of (inside) a shoe repair shop operated by his nephew along Quezon Blvd. It is very near Andoks (chicken house), a hundred meters more or less to Recto Avenue. It is on the right side (service road) of Q.av if you are facing the direction going to FEU or Dimasalang from Quiapo underpass area.. better if you know a Ilocano or Panggansinense dialects.. he buys your silver coins for its silver content or melting values and so if your coins are beautiful do not sell.

is mang totoy still located at the same place some 28 years ago?.

silver is expected to rebound to $60.00 soon. physical supply is run out.

by the way. the u.s. mint just sold some $27 million dollars worth of american eagle proof gold coins within four days.

Mang Totoy has been moving around Quiapo area for so many times but is known well enough at the vicinity to most old timers thereat. It is now apparent that he is the oldest staying man on this trade at the area as most of the other sellers are gone. The Quiapo coin prices referred hereto are only for Mang Totoy and usually based on the melting value of the silver (demand for industrial uses is high while demand for jewelry uses is low), thus the price is quite low compared to collectible coin prices..

I think mang totoy no longer doing business in his store in quiapo, the last time i seen him was around Nov last year and due to sickness, he can't be able to commute anymore. His son has a store not far away, along recto but focus more on foreign exchange and not much silver coins for collections to sell.

Can anyone here recommend any other coin dealer where we can buy collectible coins?

A very famous store is the one at Green Hills Shopping Mall, located at the 2nd Floor, Furniture Area.. It is known as JC Antique Shop and operated by the friendly Jun C.. Try also the 4th Floor Mega Mall, there is a store (World Heritage) with many items to choose from.. Another one is located at China Town Area, but I forgot the name (Lincon, Linden, or something starting with letter L).. and of course a store at Mabini Area but i cannot remember the address, it is owned and operated by another friendly man named Al.. sorry for the missing links but it seems that getting older makes me forget details..

A very sad news for many coin collectors out there as i've learned that mang totoy has been passed away this morning. Few months ago mang totoy has retired from doing business in his shop at quiapo due to illness.

when i started to deal with buying and selling in the philippines during 1981. mang totoy is the one that i always went to. the cheapest us philippine silver coins that i can get. all those coins were still in my possession. some 750 pc of 1903s to 1912s silver peso. cause i am a collector. i buy and very rarely sell.

when i emigrated to the united states in 1983. and came back 1985 for a short 1-1/2 month visit. that was the last time i saw many totoy in quiapo. that's 28 year ago. i am so sad that i heard this news today at this page. farewell to a great numismatist. many totoy.

currently in united states. i should say the buying price for common date (fine and very fine condition) u.s.-philippines silver peso dated from1903 to 1905 at around 1,080.00 peso each. prices will change accordingly to silver price movement.
