This morning, somebody went around our subdivision announcing that they are buying old coins and jewelry. What caught my attention was when they claimed that they will buy the 1972 Philippine One Peso Coin for Two thousand Pesos. Wow. I called out to the person and ask if it was true and they nodded. But my old coins of those kind were already given away for free to some friends. I did some research on this coin but found out that they are not that valuable. Actually they are sold on the streets for just ten pesos. And a decade ago they are being bought for two pesos each and smuggled out of the country (because coins are made of nickel and they make two to three tokens out of the one peso). I remember once that there was a news item from Cebu where a coin like that was sold for Thirteen Thousand Pesos plus, but that was because it was a charity fund raiser. I still do not believe that this coin is that costly. Sayang lang at wala ako ng coin na ito kanina para nasubukan ko kung talagang bibilin nila. .

Another coin that is very popular in the sense that a lot of people think that it is valuable is the 1975 Five Peso Ang Bagong Lipunan coin. It is claimed that it is silver but actually made only of steel because it clings to the magnet. The wrong idea started because the P25 ABL coin has one of its face (obverse or reverse) as exactly the same. The same for both coin except for the number 5 and 25 indicating coin value. The 1975 P25 ABL coin is fifty percent silver and being sold for one thousand pesos in coin stores in Metro Manila, the 1975 P5 ABL peso coin should cost very less (comparing silver and steel). I hope this information gets to a lot of people. Thanks.

The core of the current 10-piso is also mistakenly made of 10k gold. The date 2000 is the most popular date. Most people make rings out of it, some even wedding rings.

The 1975 Five Peso Ang Bagong Lipunan Coin is actually pure nickel according to a friend (pure nickel is also attracted to magnets like iron). The 2000 Ten Peso Coin has no gold content as one of my friends punched out the yellowish inner core and melted it. He assures that it is not gold..

Those going around subdivisions looking to buy old coins, old watches and anything remotrely of value.... watch out!

One passed by the house and was asking for the 1972 coin, showed him one, but for one reason or another, he started inquiring for what else I've got, my feeling is like he's looking for something else of higher value

I shouldnt have entertained the idea, after that, he always knocks at the door to find out if any "old" gold is available, had to turn him down about 4 times before he disappeared

They know what the 1972 coin is, they use it as just a door opener!

yes ur right! They are usually looking for a non existence coin, and they are offering 500 for each! Since that there is no such coin, the unknowing people will offer something instead or he will just said that he is also accepting other coins and after the people shows some coin of value he will buy it for a very cheap price saying that that piece is common...

That's funny coz one time I also encountered these people and they're looking for 1971 Piso. I found out that the BSP never issued a piso with that date. I also found out that they are all from Pampanga, I think most of them. Apalit, Pampanga to be exact.

as for the philippines modern commemorative coins. i like the 1975 - 1982 series. as for the american. american eagle silver and gold coins are the most popular coins and very easy to buy and sell them. 2009 american bullion silver one ounce coin with a mintage of 30,459,000 and 2010 with 34,295,000. currently with only two months plus. 10,609,500 were made and sold.
