Books are one option, but education in general is one of the best antidotes to the poison of counterfeiting.
Today the improving quality of counterfeits in some cases is outpacing our ability to detect them. Recently both advanced numismatists and grading firms have been victims of counterfeiting. In the US many books have been written and websites devoted to the topic of counterfeit American coins.
In the Philippines our problem is somewhat different. Few books have been written in nearly four decades covering the breadth of our numismatics. Published reference materials in print or on the web are scarce. Counterfeiters know this and exploit it to their advantage.
Whether the coins you collect are Chinese, Japanese, American, or Philippine, I would say do your best to attend shows and auctions, study the coins you see there to learn the characteristics of genuine coins, and develop relationships with collectors and dealers whom you trust.
